Generic Norvasc (Amlodipine) is used to treat high blood pressure or chest pain and other conditions caused by coronary artery disease. Generic Norvasc is a calcium-channel blocker. It affects the amount of calcium found in your heart and muscle cells. This results in relaxation of blood vessels, which can reduce the amount of work the heart has to do. Generic Norvasc lowers high blood pressure (hypertension). It also relieves different types of chest pain (angina).
Take Generic Norvasc exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Generic Norvasc is usually taken once daily. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Generic Norvasc: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
- feeling like you might pass out;
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
- pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest; or
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling.
Less serious Generic Norvasc side effects may include:
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- tired feeling;
- stomach pain; or
- flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.
Drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of Generic Norvasc.
You should not take Generic Norvasc if you are allergic to amlodipine.
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:
- simvastatin (Zocor, Simcor, Vytorin); or
- any other heart or blood pressure medications.
